Cunningham Pathology, a Sonic Healthcare anatomic pathology practice is privileged to include Sophia B. Sher, M.D., as a member of our medical team. Dr. Sher has extensive volunteer experience with an impressive academic background.
Dr. Sher graduated cum laude, earning her medical degree from Kazan State Medical University in Kazan, Russian Federation. Here, she completed a two-year anatomic pathology residency, followed by advanced training courses focused on oncological hematology and immunohistochemical techniques in anatomic pathology. Subsequently, she relocated to the United States and continued her postgraduate training with a four-year anatomic and clinical pathology residency at Brookwood Baptist Health in Birmingham, Alabama, during which she participated in a weekly hematopathology teaching conference. She is currently training as a GI pathology fellow at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.
Dr. Sher began her professional career as a registered nurse, working in the Post-Anesthesia and Intensive Care Unit at the Tatarstan Regional Clinical Cancer Center in Kazan, Russian Federation for four years before transitioning into a pathologist role. She has also volunteered at various hospitals throughout Washington such as Harborview Medical Center, where she served in the Burn, Trauma, Plastics, and Pediatric Departments.
Dr. Sher has received many awards for her research presentations at various competitions, including First Place at the 12th Annual Resident’s Research Competition. She has also written an article for a peer-reviewed publication.
Dr. Sher is a member of six professional organizations, including the United States and Canadian Academy of Pathology and the American Society of Clinical Pathologists.
